BOOK REVIEW: I WANNA BE WHERE YOU ARE

"No matter how tricky the choreography, always dance towards your dreams."

Author: Kristina Forest

Genre: YA, Road Fiction

Published on: 4 June 2019

17 year old ballet enthusiast, Chloe Pierce, goes on a secret road trip to audition for her idol’s ballet conservatory, whilst her mum is on a vacation. The only problem? She's terrified of driving, especially on the highway.

But it does not end there, she is accompanied by the despising, yet cute, Eli Greene and his smelly dog.

But will the lying be worth it?

Or

Will she mess all of it?

How far can she go to make her dreams come true?

Chloe Pierce and Eli Green are typical coming-of-age characters.

The book can be seen from the perspective of their two different lives. Chloe is a daughter of a single mother and Elis’s parents are divorced.

The book is all about how one time you feel hopeful and your world is large and full of possibilities and the other time it's tiny and so small that you need a microscope to see it.

We know that sometimes, parents can maintain an iron fist and squash their children's dreams in favour of their own and the book highlights such incidents. It points out the expectations of parents and the pressure they put on their children.

“I always feel like he wants something out of me, like am not living up to his idea of what a son should be.”

In addition, the book is about how to overcome self-doubt and start believing in yourself.

“Confidence starts here, she says, pointing at my heart --You have to take hold of the world and demand that it gives you what you want.”

One thing I really liked about the book is that unlike the usual feisty heroine, full of gumption, the protagonist is indeed afraid in life, but she bites the bullet and does it anyway.

Apart from that, it also talks about hardships the parents face and their fear of losing their children.

The book doesn’t have much of a storyline and there was nothing overly complicated or unexpected, but sometimes that works best.

In conclusion, the message that Kristine is trying to convey is justified throughout the book and I would suggest every teenager to read it atleast once.

P.S. Can we all just agree on the fact that this is one of the prettiest book covers?
